I've got a bunch of scrap 1x12s and am starting to build some nest boxes. I'm going to put them in as shelves along the back wall, across from the wall that has the windows (so the chickies can enjoy the view and not catch drafts). I'm getting mainly RIRs, though, after much pleading from my niece, adding a couple Amercaunas as well so she can have colored eggs when she visits.

How high off the ground should I start the nesting box shelves, and about how tall would you say is the max I should go?

I always hang mine just high enough so they can use the floor space under them(about 18" off the floor). If you put them much higher some of them may have problems getting up to them without a ladder or ramp. I also slope the tops of mine to prevent them from trying to roost on them. Good Luck and hope this helps.
