I made a waterer out of an empty, plastic, one gallon milk jug, and put a nipple on the bottom of it. (You know, those poulty nipple/pecker things, like the dog "Lix-It" jobbies?) The chicks learned to use it really quickly.
Totally solved the "mess in the waterer" problem, plus the spillage in the brooder.
yes my first time with chicks and the same was happening to me...I finally put it on a brick..raised up a bit from the floor and it works perfectly now.
Maybe ditch the "litter" and just go with paper towels..clean & easy! I even put a small washcloth in the corner under the heat light for them to cuddle on..they LOVE it! At the end of the night I through it in the washer and give them a fresh one! HTH, Keri
