Putting the pieces together!

Good evening, Chicken friends! I'm very excited to be starting a small backyard flock here in Raleigh, NC. My biggest stipulation when we bought our new house was room enouch for a coop and run, with the ability to free roam when we're home. We moved into our new home in November but actually had put the idea of getting chicks this first spring on the backburner this year with the COVID-19 goings-on. However, we happened to find a coop+run someone was selling that matched our house and took it as a sign we should jump on it this year!

I first got the desire to have backyard chickens from my aunt and uncle in New Bern, NC. I love visiting and learning about their coop and their flock and about all the quirks that come along with them. The fresh eggs are what really did me in though! It seems like a hobby where I can be outside, do something that's good for the earth, and enjoy it! My husband and I live here with our 4 year old golden retriever, Hattie. She's scared of almost everything so I'm certain it won't be any differnet with chickens. But we're going to do lots of introducing them to each other. By day, I work in wealth management and my husband is an assistant principal at an elementary school.

I have done a lot of reading/research and am planning to start small becuase I'm SO NERVOUS! The coop can hold 6-7 chicks based on the 3-4 sq ft area per chicken. We are probably going to get 5 this year, and then maybe add some on next year depending on where the numbers are then. We are going to try to get our chicks from a local hatchery and we have an appointment next Friday for that purpose. We also have on the way a set of brooding panels, brooding lamp, feeder, and waterer. We know where we are going to purchase our feed and pine shavings as well.

On a side note, I'm a broadway junkie hence The Coop Where It Happens, a nod to the "Hamilton" musical. My chicks are all going to be named after broadway lady characters, and I've had a list going in my head for longer than I care to share, haha! I should note my husband hasn't exactly signed off on this, but he's insisting on naming all of our other pets we have and will have after jam-band artists or songs, so this only seems fair!

I look forward to reading about all of your experiences and gaining lots of great knowledge! I'm so excited to start this journey.

Best, Lindsey

Nice to meet you Lindsay. Depending on breeds you may need to allow more like 4-5 sq.feet her bird in the coop. Some breeds are quite a bit bigger and more "fully packed," okay fatter than others. Others are slender even when fully mature. 10 sq.feet per bird is a good figure to shoot for in the outside run.

Chickens do like their space and when too crowded they may resort to feather plucking others and fighting over space on the roost poles.
