PVC feeders: Do I need to seal this opening?

Sealing it with silicone will keep out both water and pests.

It's not worth the trouble to use metal or wire in an opening that small

Your right they will only peck at it. Silicone is tuff .They might peck at it once but they won't get anything & they won't ever bother it again. They probably won't ever mess with it period.

Id seal it. But not with silicone, I mean silicone would probably work the best but in a way it is "gluing" the feeder in place. Id take a small hose maybe 1/4 OD ( bout the size of a fuel line ) then wrap that around the feeder and press it into the wall gap. Now it is sealed and still will allow for the feeder to be easily taken out and put back in incase you need clean fix or mod it in anyway. Just my 2cents.
