I have read that females ducks start making different noises early on, is this true? Both my 4 week old pekins are making a weird sound that sounds like a cross between quacking and chuffing. It's not real loud yet, but I have heard a couple of my 3 week old golden hybrids making a similiar sound, and they're supposed to be sex linked females. Am I getting my hopes up thinking that my pekins are girls? They came from TSC with no sexing, so I have been hoping. When should I expect a noise from the boys?

I ordered all female runners. At near three weeks, a few of them made peep-honk noises. At about four weeks someone (hard to tell in a crowd of eleven, just who said what

) quacked a big waaaaaak - waaaaaaak - waaaak! Most seem like they are quacking.

Drakes have a much more quiet, muffled noise some say sounds like a whisper, or a quiet, hissy whonk.

There is a web site with recordings of the differences. I Googled it before and found it - sorry I don't remember the url.

Another thing I want to mention is that not everyone develops at the same rate, so it could be a while before you are sure of everyone. I still wonder if I might have a drake in the bunch. There was a 90% guarantee on the sexing. Sometimes I think I would prefer not to have a drake, due to the aggressiveness in mating of many of them, but sometimes I think I would like to keep this flock going and perhaps sell hatching eggs.
