hi everyone Iam new on the forum. was wondering if I could pick your brains for some much needed advice?
I have 5 quails in a 10ft x 10ft lovebird avairy. 2 males and 3 females. I was under the impression that its impossible for them to hatch their own young? well it happened!!! i found 6 chicks in the avairy this morning!! sadly all dead :( they had been attacked.

If I had know they actually can hatch I would have watched more closely as one hen was sitting alot on her eggs but then left them.

my question is........ should I seperate the males or maybe just keep one male to 3 ladies and see if they hatch chicks again? or seperate a hen thats sitting so i can get the chicks to warmth?? not sure what to do?? i dont want this to happen again. Iam sure it was the male that killed them.... but which male I dont know?? the father or the other one. ?? so any advice would be great right now. thanks everyone.

Not at all sure about Quails but if you type in the search bar something will come to help you....Are you sure it was the male that killed them and not a predator? Common sense tells me that perhaps you should separate them while they are small and leave the hen to keep them warm... So sorry for your loss, didn't know Quails were s

o vicious...

hi. have seperated the males now one has his female and the other has his two females. It definately wasnt a predator as my cage is wire and theres no way anything smaller than a worm could crawl in :). so think it was the other male that killed them.... or they died first and were pecked as quails have been known to eat dead birds. this time i will be watching like a hawk so first sign of a possible hatch I will have time to get the hen n babies to a heat lamp :). just was a totall surprise as everything i read said domestic quails will not sit on eggs let alone hatch them!!

Just as a matter of interest why did you pick Quails? the ones I have seen are so cute, is it for the eggs, they are even smaller than my bantams

hi. no hawks as its got a roof n three sides all enclosed with wire as its an avairy. have 12 lovebirds in there too. chose qualis because they are smaller than chickens. they dont smell and they are really friendly with the kids. we do eat the eggs.... but they are very rich so too many gives me a stomach ache. we wanted chicks but I was going to get an incubator as i was told its impossible for them to hatch chicks. so was really surprised when finding those dead chicks!! dont want that to happen again. have seperated the males now. going to watch any female thats sitting on eggs!!
