I am in the planning stage of building some quail pens.. The cages will sit on supports in a bank style setup. I will be using 1/2x1/2 for the floor.. Will chicken wire be ok for the sides or should i just just poney yo the cash for the 1x2? I am thinking it may be too flimsey with the chicken wire as it will be self supporting so to speak. Any thoughts would be great..

When you say self supporting you mean there won't be a frame where the chicken wire will be attached to?
If that's how it is then you definatly wanna go for the 1/2". And over all a cage looks way neater with 1/2 instead of chicken wire, and I believe 1/2" it's just about $10 more expensive than chicken wire.

I honestly contemplated the same thing but after having raccoons pull some of my quail thru the one piece of chicke wire on my cage , i decided against it.. a coon can reach right in chicken wire...

Chicken Wire Has No Structural Support, For That You'd Need The 1 X 1/2 Rabbit Wire. Also The Quail Eggs Will Roll Out Of Chicken Wire.

I didnt even think about the eggs rolling out.. The reaosn I want them free standing is so I can take them out and pressure wash them.. Thanks for the help now off to TSC to pick up some wire.

I have built most of my cages like you describe the 1/2" X 1/2 available here where I am is only 19 gauge cloth I do not like it it is too flimsy the 1/2" X 1 ' JJ suggests here it is 16 gauge much sturdier, chicken wire to me is only good for the fish baskets I build I think it is the 17 gauge stuff though.
