What months are quail usually purchasable? I live in the pacific northwest and I just this year started doing chickens and build my first coop and run and got my chicks in a brooder right now. Well, I'm kind of hooked and was looking around at what other poultry I'd like to do and quail seem pretty awesome. My only obstacle is my inability to get quail soon. I'm fairly young and going to college and most of my time and money goes towards that, but school will be getting out mid June and that would be the perfect time for me to start, I'll have most the bills paid off by then and my schedule will be wide open. Will quail still be available by mid/late June or do you think I'd be stuck ordering fertilized eggs and relying on an incubator? The incubator thing kind of freaks me out because I've never done it before and they are so small and fragile, I would hate to screw them up. Thanks.

First off, Welcome to the quail board!! I think you should be able to find quail in june. Id guess you could look in your local craig's list and get most any breed ya want. You can around here due to the "canned hunts" that are common and breeders supply those. But if you raise quail for anything but pets, your gonna want to make friends with a incubator. They wont as a rule, hatch their own eggs in captivity. In my humble opinion, hatching the little fuzzy butts is the best part of raising quail. Its nothing you cant handle... There are tons of folks right here that can and will walk you thru anything your not comfortable with. Do a little research with the search feature, you could write a really good quail book with it. Either way, good luck. Bill

Most are available year-round but if you're looking for grown or young birds you won't be able to have any shipped except for the spring and fall due to too hot and too cold temps.

most chicks are only shipped in warmer months so yea, you can get chicks shipped then. If it's grown birds, you will have to wait until fall or find them local. This would depend on what breed of quail though as I haven't seen any people willing to ship buttons. I'm not saying they can't be shipped, just I haven't ran across anyone yet that shipped them that I know of.

Thanks for all the responses. It appears I'll have to learn and use an incubator. Thanks for the offer, Mt. Baker Quail but I'm still pretty uncertain about my quail future. I may wait till the Fall to do it. If it works out in June I'll try and send you a PM.
