Tell me about it. It was a button, too, so I was all "HOW DID YOU EAT THAT?! It's as long as you are!" I blame JustHatchin. They're from her birds

I put my newly hatched babies on old bath towels for the first couple of days. When the towel gets dirty I change them over to wood shavings. This has worked well for me. I do this with my chicks too. The towels are more absorbent then paper and gives better traction, they cuddle up in them too.

Just make sure you aren't shredding things with staples in them. (Remember, better shredders accept stapled paper. Eating staples is not healthy for the critters - and since they are shiny, well, they probably would...)

I was considering buying a shredder for just this purpose!

Also, make sure you consider waste disposal of the dirty bedding.

Some people here have ample space to dig a big hole & bury the shredded paper. Others might choose to compost it. However, those who stick to organic gardening might not want to, since who knows WHAT chemicals the paper has in/on it that would be released into the soil as it decomposes (might be a concern for some with their birds, too).

My pine bedding is easy to compost. Shredded paper would be MUCH more difficult for me. I'd have to thoroughly bury it to prevent pieces from blowing all over, too. Too much work for me...

I Put Hatchlings Directly On Bare Towels.... In 5-7 Days (once Their Hock Joints Are Set And Spraddle Leg Is No Longer A Problem) I Change Them Over To Plain Good Old Fashioned Newspaper... Not Shredded, Just Use It The Way Its Made As Liner For Flooring And Turn Them Lil Fuzzballz Loose On It. When Its Dirty I Simply Place Them In A Clean Brooder And Remove The Old Dirty 1. I Do Not Use Shavings Of Anykind- Ever.
