Quail being taken....

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

Scatter flour around your cage in the evening and see what footprints are left behind...

Wow. Talk about effective!! Thank goodness my varmints are bigger and easier to spot when they come around (bears).

Cool! Nice to have some confirmation. I thought about the rain, too.

I don't know about the coon eating on the deck...there was only the remains of 1 quail on the deck but 4 were missing so whatever grab them out of the cage took 3 away elsewhere. I like the poisen idea but the are the neighbors cats roaming around also and I as much as I don't want them in my yard, I do like cats and would feel horrible if one of them drank the poisen also.

I was just outside checking on everyone and there was some sort of animal fight across the street in the woods...sounds like a cat vs. something else....it was quite disturbing.

I had the same problem but mine was skunks and foxes. They were sqeezing into the smallest holes. Then started digging under th boards on the side. I had to triple staple the wire then I took some old tin and bent it in half and nailed it around the bottom to stop the burrowing in to get them. Another way to find out other than the flour idea (which was a great idea i admit) is to get a game camera that the deer hunters use. They are digital and motion/heat activated. You can go out the next morning and get the memory card out to see what pictures you have. That will give you and idea of what animal is getting them at least. I have pictures of coyote trying to get at my birds but they had no such luck. The cameras range from $50 up. Youcould prob find a good used one on Ebay or some used site like that.

Yes a coon or a possum will come right on your back porch or deck. I have a brooder and grow out pen on my pack porch pretty much right next to the door and under the motion sensor light. They didn't care and would climb right up on the porch to get the chicks. I even had a coon challenge me for the chicks. I banged on the door and then swung it open fast to scare it and it stood up on its hind legs and hissed at me. He wasn't going to leave. So we had a different kind of resolution:smack. The permanent kind.

The fly bait in the soda sounds like a good idea. I have some wild barn cats though and am afraid they would drink it. Good luck getting your killer...

As I am driving home from work tonight I turn a corner which is at the most 1-2 tenths of a mine from my house abd coon is scrambling across the road...I slow down so I don't hit it....duh...I shoudl of hit the thing! What was I thinking?
