Yes they can. 1/2"x1/2" is the only sure way to keep them out and even then, some small species of egg stealing snakes can get through.
I agree using 1/2" x 1/2" still not a given.
Came home the other day had two dead 3 1/2 week old's in separate pens. (they have been outside due to high temps). Looked like snake killed and could not eat... But the separate cages was throwing me. Made no since if the snake was getting in through the door gaps. (even though they are small).
Last night heard a Bonk.... Maybe that is what killed the two birds, Bonking.... Also it was a light egg day......
Well low and behold today this guy was just going from cage to cage right through the 1/2" wire with no problems. Not known as an egg eater our bird for that matter.
Thankfully he realized he could not eat the birds....... Not sure what he was looking for... So there is no for sure way to keep snakes out.
Oh and I did not do him in just threw out of cage the scared him into the woods..... I would rather have him around and help keep the moccasin's away.
