I was planning to build a cage for quails, plans look something like this. But I'm not sure how tall should each section should be, they are 0.35 meters tall here just a rough estimate. how tall should i make them?

My understanding of quail from reading (and I'm a total newbie) is that quail do best with more headroom than what you're planning, which if I convert right seems to be about 1 foot or 12 inches high. I read that since they can startle and fly up, they hit their heads on low roofs. My quail cage is 20 inches high.

I could maybe make it into two parts rather then three, and increase the height and make them 25-27 inches

Which type of Quail are you looking to build this cage for?

If its for button quail or coturnix quail the height should be about 12 inches.
they tend to jump up and break there little necks after hitting there heads if they get startled.

but some will say 7 inches is good. and thats actually what i built mine to be.
I have read that the cotunix like more confinned space. But so far my 7 inch height is working out well they lay about 2 eggs a day they have light on them all day and there is like a night light in with them for the night time.

my cages for these little guys (coturnix) is 24 x 24 by 7"
and I have 3 to 4 females and 1 male.. in each cage

my cages for the button quail are different and they are 8ft long 12 inches high and 24 inches wide. and the sides are osb board and i get to them from the top...this has worked out excellent for them they are happy and i get 2 eggs a aday from some and 4 of my gurls are broody.. and I read they are not broody and dont like to sit. mine takes turns. sitting.. but now they even started to lay in another spot trying to hatch more. I was shoked and surprise from this since everyone and the books have told me I will have to artifically hatch using incubator that these birds are not the sitting kind..well mine are ..... I hope its because of the way there cage is for them..

I dont know if this helps or if i am rambling maybe both.. I hope so...

Thanks a lot was heaps of help!:D

I don't know much about quail pens, but I'll tell you what I did.

The guy I got my coturnix from had low cages of maybe 7 inches tall. They were maybe 4 ft x 4 ft or so. I obtained a 6 foot bank of cages that are 2ft x 2ft x 30inches or so. My cots jump pretty seriously when they're surprised. I have 4 in one cage and 6 in another. They seem to like it. They're not terribly crowded and don't act crowded (no feather picking or aggressive behavior). When I moved them to their new home, they didn't even bother to stop laying (something cots would normally do, I'm told). Instead, the little ones keep giving me an egg a day per female bird. Sometimes more. Go figure.

This is how it looks so far, abit of changes, a lot bigger then the one above, 170cm tall, 170 long and 60 wide.
