Ive had chickens for several years and want to expand to some quail.
Ive read implications that having them cohabitate is not good.

What if:

what if I have the quail cages in the coop, suspended so as not to allow any contact with the chickens. What are the pro's and con's of this arrangement?

I would really like to conserve the space and cant really find any specific reason as to why I cant do this.

Coryza and Mycoplasma are the biggest issues. Chickens can carry these diseases without showing symptoms, old world quail catch them easily and being in the same air space can bring on symptoms as infectious particles can be carried on the wind. Most people recommend 20 feet between quail and chicken with a solid panel on the shared side.

There's a chance you may have no problems. It's a risk you'll have to weigh up for yourself. I'm in New Zealand and we don't have Coryza here but I'm sure we have Mycoplasma. I keep my spare males with my bantam chickens without problems (other than certain males harassing the chickens - one plucks my silkies topknot)!

I have breeder and grow out pens in an open barn. About 4 foot off the ground on a 2x4 rails attached to the wall.

I range chickens and Turkey's. They go in and out of the barn as they please.

I have had no issues with the quail getting sick so far.

To me the one plus of this is the chickens and Turkey's clean up any feed the quail kick out of the feeder.

My quail are messy eaters

This is exactly what I'm in the process of making. Keeping the quail up high so the chickens have no contact. It was to conserve space also and to make feeding easier in the winter.

At the moment, the top cage has two baby chickens and the bottom cage has baby quail.
I used dead space in the corners but still allowed room for me to walk around for easy cleaning. Like a U shape.

I keep my quail in with my chickens, never had a problem but I only buy from trusted friends and I (and they) have closed stock so less chance of infection taking hold.

My rooster and my quail rooster have crow-offs, it's funny as hell
