so a few days ago I hatched out 35 coturnix quail. The chicks are different colors can you tell the sex this early?
here is what some of them look like like a mohawk :) with yellow on the face

this isnt the best pic but you can see how some of them dont have any yellow markings

Hello,

on the first picture is a Red Range Tuxedo.
I think the others, too.

You can´t sex coturnix with this color before they are 6 - 8 weeks old.

I don't think your are coturnix quails. Here is a picture of my coturnix at 5 days old. The brown are coturnix. The yellow color are some type of cross with coturnix. Since I purchased the eggs so not sure what they are cross with.

Another photo with the same group on 12 days old. Will need to move to out door cage soon.

Hello Speedy2020,

your quails are all coturnix, too. The brown and the yellow ones. It´s just another color.

thank you :) they just looked so different from the coturnix i have owned before

Loretta, it looks like you have dark range/Tibetan tuxedos. The yellow down will eventually feather in as white. You will have dark birds with white "eyebrows". I have a few of those now and they are very handsome birds. Unfortunately, you can't feather sex them because of their color.

Speedy, you have a bunch of wild type cots with a few Italians in the mix.

Alex has some picture on her website, Stellar Gamebirds, of chicks and adult birds that you can use as reference. On the home page, click on the link for the Cot Identification page.
