Backstory:
We recently bought a second batch of quail eggs from a new breeder intending to breed them with our first batch of healthy quails. A week after they hatched we started noticing some abnormalities. One had its wingtips facing outwards(now seems normal), some running backwards, one wasn't growing bigger and one, we believe, had an eyelid that had grown over. Now it's a bit past two weeks we've seperated the ones that look severely ill from the chicks that look fine and we don't know whether this was caused by inbreeding, diseases etc. We also started noticing some with swollen chins and weird sneezes like they were having breathing problems. The chick that wasn't growing bigger is now half the size of the chicks that seem fine. We haven't noticed them fighting each other as well.

We doubt it would've been temperature/humidity issues since we calibrated it from the start and everything was stable all throughout compared to our first batch (which still ended up fine when we had our power cut for 5hrs straight!). Should also note that we discovered two eggs that were cracked through (but didn't find anything that had leaked out) a week after incubation started when I was candling them.

Thank you for any replies.

I think you need to cull the dodgy ones.

It could be a result of inbreeding. Poor nutrition. Bad genetics. Many things.

I have been culling my gimpy ones immediately. I do not want to keep any bad genetics in my quail family.

(Sorry that was a bit harsh. I find it easier ethically- to cull them immediately. It's hard to know for sure if they are or aren't suffering. I feel for you though, it is very upsetting :hugs)

Also, I am sorry :hugs That's traumatic and sometimes we (mostly me) all get too caught up in "kill it with fire before it spreads!" to properly recognize that. Looks like you've got some nice birds - if you're going for Gen 2 I'd replace all the males with ones from another source before hatching the eggs. Good luck!

:hugsThanks guys for all your support. I will have a chat with my partner about culling them. I know he'll be a bit reluctant but I don't want the lil ones to be suffering from these deformities. Definitely won't be buying from this seller again.
