I have 5 quails that I've had since they were ping-pong balls on legs. Sooo cute. 4 different colorations. I don't know who is male or female. (I am very new to the quail world!) I've seen pictures here, but right when I think I get them all figured out, I see or read something else which gets me un-figured-out! Aaaugh!!! I've got one white one with a small black spot on the back of the head, and what I think is a tuxedo. The others are harder.

IF I were to post pictures of my biddies, would anyone here be able to venture a guess as to the gender?

Post away and someone should be able to help you. :)

Yeah... Thats what they looked like! Lol!! They are Coturnix quails... Biggest ones about 6" long. Too big for buttons.

OK. Here are my biddies: #1: Cocoa. Smallest of the 5. Always the most vocal of the bunch, even as a chick. He began crowing this weekend. Growls at everyone. Got the tar beat out of him this morning, but I figure he had it coming. ( He is ok... just got a solid peck on the head.) Doesn't "foam" when I looked at his vent, though. MY GUESS: MALE TIBETAN?

#2: Marshmallow: Large, fat! Seems to be the target of Cocoa and Tiny (Definite male) most of the time. Pure white (dingy grey here- loves to bathe in the sand!) with a single black spot back of the head. Blue eyes!

Rather tame, likes to get his/her cheeks scratched. MY GUESS: FEMALE A&M?

#3: Speedy: Large. Dark stripes all over. The fastest runner in the bunch as a chick. Didn't appreciate the re-patriation of Sandy, but has calmed down now. MY GUESS: FEMALE GOLDEN?

#4: Sandy: Large. A paler version of Speedy. Given to a friend when still a fuzzy chick, but then returned to me last week. Very calm, quiet. MY GUESS: FEMALE GOLDEN?

#5: Tiny: Definitely a male, as he "foamed" when I checked his vent area. Smaller, just like Cocoa. Has become quite aggressive as well, especially when Cocoa is around. (I have separated Cocoa and Marshmallow into a separate cage, where they seem happier.) PRETTY SURE MALE TUXEDO.

3 and 4 are female Italians from what I can see and I would say you are correct to say that the other was a jumbo white. It looks like you also have a tuxedo and I cant be sure for the first one. Unfortunately I dont think you can feather sex the tux, white, or the other so you would have to see from other things. Tux foamed so male, and chances are the other two are males if they are crowing or attacking each other. Males can fight so keep an eye on them!

This post is 7 years old. I don’t think any of the birds are still alive.
