Hello! I started keeping quail last year, and since I wanted them for eggs and meat, originally I was just going to get some jumbo browns. But I also got a random assortment of colors just for fun, and... well, you know, it was fun.
I'm trying to learn more about quail genetics so I can start planning breeding projects, and most of my birds are pretty straightforward, but I have a few mysteries that I'd like to ask for help identifying. (I no longer have the seller's info to ask them directly, unfortunately!)
1. Very light, sandy beige tuxedo hen. I love this color but have no idea what it is!
2. A roo. Is this what they call fawn/roux dilute? He started off with more grayish tones, but has become increasingly reddish over time.
3. One of the above roo's beautiful juvenile offspring, who is much more silvery! (Unsure of the mother- the hens I have in with that roo are the light sandy lady, a white, a pharaoh, a tibetan tux, and the golden below)
4. This hen I know is some variety of golden, but I wanted to ask if the reddish spots are part of the normal range of golden Italians (I usually see them with the dark spots) or if there's a dilution gene at work, or if she's a different variety of golden than italian?
Any identification help is hugely appreciated, but if anyone has specific knowledge about possible involved genetics, that would be wonderful!
Last question (sorry, I know I'm piling them on!) Can anyone tell me more about the black at hatch/bh gene and how I would distinguish a bh chick from another dark chick, like a tibetan? I can't seem to find photos of what it looks like.
Thank you!!
