Hi,
My coturnix quail laid her first egg on 3 Aug. However, there are no eggs after that (considering today is 6 Aug). From what I read, I understand that quails lay eggs almost everyday. Is it normal for a quail to lay her first egg and shut off for a while? Will the egg laying resume in a few days or is it something wrong that I did?

Initially it takes awhile for the quail hen's body to get the process right. You might even get a soft shelled egg, or a tiny one while the kinks are worked out. Production will be a bit spotty but then it will settle down and you'll get an egg almost every day.

If the quail have been recently moved that can cause a quail hen to stop laying for up to 4-6 weeks. They don't like change.

Thank you.. Yea, let me give her some time and see how it goes.

I have 9 hens, I almost always get 9 eggs, but maybe once a week I get 8. Mine all started laying at different times between about 8-11 weeks, some laid a gooey no shell egg every couple days before I got a good one, then it took a few days to get regular. Some laid a nice hard shelled egg every day from the very start.

I got 3 hens yesterday morning, and got 4 eggs so far (2 each day). First day, got one in the box in which they were in the car, and one in their new cage. "Well, those ones were already in the oven by the time I got them" I thought.

Today, around 4pm they laid 2 more. So this got me thinking on the egg formation process, and after some research, looks like it get started after oviposition (so after they lay an egg, their body immediately start a 24 hour cycle of producing another one - see tables below). Hope this helps!
