So I did an experiment with quail eggs from the market. I candled and know for sure one is fertile. I did the float test today because it’s day 20 and the one fertile egg hasn’t hatched and it was moving. Is it normal for quail eggs to take this long and I learned from my chicken hatching experience and I am not intervening but I would like to know when I should if at all intervene and how late is normal? I want to help if the baby needs it but if it’s not ready I don’t want to help. Any experienced people that have any advice would be greatly appreciated. No pips but there is movement. The air cell is looking like it’s shaped interestingly I drew an illustration and took photos of candling.

If it's day 20, and if the float test didn't kill it, then it sounds like it has a chance. Your temperature was likely low. Do you have multiple calibrated thermometers in your incubator?

Candling is the best way to tell if an egg is alive. Float testing is a good way to kill a chick since the shell is porous.

I had read another thread they said to float test it but now I know. I have 2 calibrated thermometers. Candling what would I be looking for because I didn’t see movement.

Look for internal pips and/or movement. At day 20, if the chick is still alive, if you tap on the shell and hold it next to your ear, you might hear tapping or chirping in return.

That thread is a menace. Idk if there’s a mod that can put a warning and disclaimer on the original post of that thread to warn people it’s unsafe and out dated.

you can tap the egg and listen for or feel movement. If you candle and see no movement on day 20, it’s either dead, nearly dead, or you need a better light to candle.
