This is my first experience with hatching anything.
On June 27th I picked up 12 coturnix eggs from a local famer. The eggs had all been laid between 4 & 8 hours earlier. He gave me his Brinsea Mini Advance (auto turner, auto temp & humidity) to borrow. Two of the eggs broke sometime between picking them up and getting them home so I was left with 10.
The incubator seemed to be running cool and did not get warm until the day before lockdown. I asked farmer if that was ok and he said it was and that it shouldn't be warm. The eggs felt to be room temp. Since the day before lockdown the incubator has felt warm to the touch. The incubator had been plugged in for a few hours before I picked it and the eggs up. There was a period of about 25 minutes between unplugging it at the farmer's and getting home.
The incubator was set to 17 day hatch, 99.8 degrees, turning every hour at an angle of 5 and 60% humidity. I've had no power failures or flickers since plugging the incubator in. I've refilled the humidifer every 3 days and again the day before lockdown. I had to fill it again yesterday as it was completely empty.
The eggs were candled on July 10 and there were 7 viable eggs with moving wigglers in them, and visible heartbeats, lots of veins. They looked a little bit underdeveloped from what I can see online but honestly, I wasn't really sure what I was looking at.
Lockdown was July 12th around midnight, the eggs haven't been turned since.
Today is July 17th and still no pips. 5 of the eggs wiggled around like crazy last night so I was expecting to wake up to at least a few pips, but nothing.
So here are my questions:
is today really day 20 or is it more like 18 or 19 since they didn't rest before going into the incubator? and because the incubator ran cool?
Should I keep up my hope? The farmer said I can pick up 12 new eggs tomorrow but I hate to give up hope if there is a slight chance even 1 of them will make it. (it will be the most loved chick in the world, LOL!)
If I get a new batch of eggs should I change any of the settings? I'm using the settings the farmer says he has nearly 100% hatch with.
I don't want to mess with them to float test them since I really don't know what I'm doing at this point.
Help?
