Help! My Japanese quail kept one eye shut all yesterday and today she has been very sleepy, fluffed up and listless. She is one year old. Her eyelid looks a little bit pink and a tiny bit swollen. She is still pruning herself, laying, pooping (normally) and has had a drink. She also has a big bold patch on her back which I think is from the other girl quails walking over her or maybe pecking her.

Can you separate her by herself? I would get some Terramycin eye ointment or Vetericyn eye gel to apply into her eye 2-3 times daily. If you cannot get those, use a dab of Triple Antibiotic Ointment or Polysporin. You can also put any of thise on her back. Are they overcrowded? Does she seem sick with a respiratory infection or diarrhea. You can also post on the Quail forum here:

I have separated her. She doesn't appear to have diarrhea or any respiratory issues, but just wants to sleep. I'm currently trying to find the products you mentioned and in the meantime I have tried flushing her eye with saline water.
