Because it's cheaper than buying humanely raised or reasonably fresh meat and the stuff in the supermarket around here is nearly spoiled when you first bring it home. My options are rather limited.

If you eat quail eggs or eat your quail, then whatever you feed your quail ultimately ends up in your body. Given the ingredient list of most cat food, I think I'd want to avoid that one, if possible. That's a personal preference, though.

Because all you need to do is feed meal worms and cat feed...which is a total waste of time and money, but you can rest on your lorals....I cooked it up in my basement!

I don't know why people do such things! I guess I missed the class on paying more, doing more work, and getting less in my economics class. I don't know what to tell you

Yes. That is a very reasonable concern and honestly the only reason I'd considered not doing it at all. The compromise I'd come up with (which is probably me just deluding myself, but I'm on month eight of unemployment here) is that the more natural brands of cat foods are still better than some of the ingredients in the processed foods that I can't bring myself to buy. It may be that those brands never have enough coupons to make them free/nearly free, in which case it's a moot point because I'm not PAYING for cat food for my birds.

No one really serious about raising game birds, feeds their birds cat feed. Anyone that tells you that they feed their birds cat feed....doesn't have 100+ happy healthy game birds, but they may have a cat.

Why not feed them a complete diet? If you can't keep them don't try. Cat food is horrible for them, it has way too much salt, fat, and meat. If you want to save money combine your order with a friend's and buy from a local mill... You're question about how much is too much, I wouldn't give them any. It is unhealthy for them, if you won't eat unhealthy things that are no where near a proper diet why would you give them that?
