I am beginning to set up some cages for some quail. This will be my first experience with them. Before I invest in feeders I thought I would check with everyone here on what their favorite feeders are and why. All information is GREATLY appreciated!

most people use chick feeders. I make them out of juice or pop bottles myself. because they waste to much with the chick feeders. you can find ways to make your own on youtube.
Also I had some freezer containers I made into feeders that work pretty good.

This Is What I Went With. I'm A Newbie At Raising Quail, And My Work Schedule Keeps Me Away From Home Up To Seven Days At A Time. I Didn't Want To Burden My Wife With The Responsibility Of Watering And Feeding, So That Is Why I Went With This Feeder.
I Set It On Two Bricks In The Pen And Get Very Little Waste.

Here is what I use. They screw onto quart sized mason jars. If you're planning on building several cages, WalMart sells mason jars.
BTW, Welcome to the quail forum on BYC.

I used the chick feeders when I first got quail, when they were babies on paper towels I liked them fine, but once I switched to shavings it got dirty so fast it drove me crazy. I put it up on a piece of brick and that helped but then they'd knock it around once it got down to one quarter full. Maybe if I had been transfering them to a wire floor it wouldn't have annoyed me so much.

I ended up making a feeder out of PVC just because I couldn't find anything that fit what I was picturing would work well for me. I need to make a few modifications but so far I like it.

Cheers,
Jessie

I Like That Feeder Sycamore. HowMany Quail Feed Off Of That, And How Often Do You Have To Replenish It?

Vickie, Sorry... I Forgot To Let You Know That The Certain Feeder I Have Cost Around $30

As the current incarnation stands it's made of about a foot of 2" PVC with 3/4" PVC for the ports. The biggest problem with that is that I made the ports too deep into the pipe so I have to thump the side to get it to fill the ports back up when they eat everything in reach. I end up doing this three or four times a day or whenever I walk past the cage about 2-3" inches of the bottom of it aren't usable because of the port placement, I put screw caps in the base to empty feed trapped in the bottom. I have five coturnix in the cage and I end up refilling it every third day.
I'm planning on remaking two more with 1" ports and cutting them closer to the base to cut back on wasted space. I'm saving the originals for oyster shell feeders.
I'm using scrap PVC to cut costs, but if I were buying my materials new I would get 3" PVC and use 1-1 1/2" PVC for my openings.

Cheers,
Jessie

What is inside the holes?

Those are PVC ports, like those on a wild bird feeder. It functions like a single level wild bird feeder, cuts down mess a lot. Ports are made of 3/4" PVC with the bottom third cut out.

The pieces before assembly.

View from underneath before the screw in base has been installed or the outer edge had been ground down flush.

Close up side view, again before the edge was ground off.
