Quail flooring

Somehow my quail is not strong enough to get water from something similar. Yours are doing well though?
Yes no problems. I find by 3 weeks they can do it easily. All they have to do is push their face in and the pressure pushes the button to the side. They don’t have to tap the button, just stick their face in there, which I’ve found they do naturally, trying to get the water that accumulates on the little piece that sticks out below the button.

We had a similar issue w/ our quail. They will live indoors year-round. We tried sand, but I didn’t like it. We are using some Timothy hay we had laying around for our rabbit & guinea pigs. We bought a hay bale at Theissen’s awhile back. The hay needs to be changed every week. It’s more natural for the quail and much easier to clean. Also it all goes into the compost bin. But the best part is no gross poop balls on the feet!

What didn't you like about the sand? I've had to move some birds inside, and the pine shavings we're using now aren't great. I was thinking of putting them on sand so I can scoop poop.

Several items I've learned through trial and error. Sand is great, in a sandbox with sides high enough that they can't kick it out or mix it with other stuff. They'll need a short-step up to get in and out though. The sand can also be sifted then washed, then reused.

I have a vinyl flooring board propped up on a riser for them to rest their feet when they're tired of wire. Vinyl flooring is amazingly durable and waterproof and can be washed easily. Home Depot will sell single pieces so you don't have to get the whole box. A well placed plank will also serve as a step into the sandbox.

Those are my two thoughts.
Stupid question! How exactly do you wash the sand??!?
