Okay, I've read all 12 pages of the Quail Feed thread, but I was still left with one question....do I ever take them OFF the Startena (or other Game Bird Starter with close to or at 30% protein)?

I'm not going to eat them, just keep them as pets. Everything I read seemed to say "hatch to dispatch" but, if that is years from now, do I keep them on the Purina Startena?

No, not if you're going to keep them long term, you'll need to reduce the protein level or your hens will start laying too large eggs, which can lead to prolapse.

The only birds I keep long term are breeders/layers. I have them on a 22% layer mix.

The layer feed may have a tad too much calcium for the roosters, But to be honest, I don't care.

If a rooster gets to be over a year old here, he is one of a select few.

There are lots of options as to breeder /keeper feeds Purina makes a good one, I'm not positive but I think its called "layena".
