Quail For Eggs - Questions

I have to agree with Joe here, first off why not feed them a complete diet instead of mixing it. Quail don't need scratch or corn, they an however live on it but they won't be healthy. The best option is a quality GBS. Quail also shouldn't eat laying crumbles. They can eat game bird layer but not chicken layer, which one are you talking about? Also coturnix are full size long before 18-20 weeks.

I agree with what you're saying Robo. My point was that quail don't choke on cracked corn or scratch grain, that quail over the winter here need to generate body heat for survival and as spring approaches you can begin to condition them again with layer crumbles ( generic term, the Blue Seal brand clearly states GAMEBIRD). IMO, and only in my opinion, the Coturnix has special needs in winter, and special needs while laying. 18-20 weeks was an arbitrary number I use in a formula for keeping track of costs and feed. (80/Coturnix and 120/ Bobwhite in days.) That is usually how long till auction. I was merely offering an opinion based on my experience, for which I was accused of using a "chicken" model. I raised quail long before chickens. There a million ways to breed and raise quail, ducks, chickens, pheasants, etc... and I don't know all of them. The cracked corn and scratch grain is also cheaper, and goes farther. That is exactly why I love BYC. I realize we are getting off topic, I just wanted to clarify.

I guess I didn't state that just right. I shouldn't have said that my quail would choke to death on cracked corn and scratch feed. I should have said that they would slowly starve to death on such feed!

There is a big difference, and I should have pointed that out.

Any whole/cracked/milled corn product is only...at best. 7% protein. 3% fat, and 3% fiber.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I will say that...."It's just plane wrong"!

Don't you guys have access to any good quality game bird ration?

You do know that you can feed meal worms and grind up cat food...OH BROTHER!

is too much protein problematic? If I have a game bird feed and offer them bsf, is that bad? Do I need to downgrade the game bird feed to something lower in protein if they have lots of bugs?

Oh brother is right ! First they choke on it, but you meant to say they starve on it. Now you want to point that out. New to the sight huh? Just got a couple of quail? Why don't you hop on Amazon and pick up a few quail books before you go shooting off your mouth? In my OP I clearly said it was a winter supplement, and that I increased layer feed toward spring. You called that a chicken model and said your birds would choke. Then when I pointed out that most wild birds eat grains to get through winter, you state you meant to say they will slowly starve. Then you come up with cat food, lol. That is what I want spread around my pens and in my housing, rotting meat and fish pellets. That won't bring in insects, rodents or predators, right? I mean in your vast experience as a breeder you must know that already ? LMAO. Do you know well the black bears around here can smell? Cat food would bring them running like they heard a dinner bell. They live on pet food and garbage left out and they like it. Hey, why not just hang rotting meat in the pen and wait for maggots to drop? (and coyotes and foxes, and possum, and coons , and bears and ...............)
