Quail Forum Information

Ok, thanks.

I want to start raising some quail next spring for meat (and eggs, probably) and figured I would start with Coturnix. I have heard they are easier than bobwhite quail, and being new to quail, I figured easier is better. But, I also wanted large enough quail so I didn't have to cull 20 of them for one meal for my family, LOL.

I'm glad someone started this thread, so I can read everyone else's Q&A, also.

Peace -
Meriah

The Coturnix are also ideal because the mature faster... 6-8 weeks and they're full grown. I have Bobwhites that are about that age, and they still have quite a ways to go. For meat, yes, I would go with the Coturnix. I usually save out the females for eggs, and extra males are either sold or eaten (someday... I can't keep them around long enough for hubby to try them!)

FEEDING
24% Chick feed until 6 wks
Purina Gamebird Chow maintenance after 6 wks and suppliment a grit / oyster shell mix.

I use this method of feeding because these are the feeds I can readily find where I live.

What does everyone else feed?

I feed Dumor Chick starter/grower-20% for game birds...it's all I can find---so far. They do well on it, i know it's a lower percentage of protien, but I make up for that with ground up kitty food (kibble) and boiled eggs to name a few.

JUST FYI - MEDICATED chick starter (for chickens) is a no-no for gamebirds, especially the little Button quail.

Really? I forget who had it but I saw medicated gamebird starter with a cocciostat.
Maybe it was more for turkeys and ducks.

My quail were started on unmedicated chick starter and we just converted them over
to Nutrena Gambird crumbles. I'm not sure how they fit the crumbles in their tiny
beaks but they eat A LOT. I'd guess 6 cups per day for 32 Cortunix.

I was told that the medicated feed inhibits the fertility in the males... I just never took that chance.

I have one word to describe Coturnix eating-habits... piranha.

I about lose a hand if I let them go too long without food.
