Hi all, any experiance or help would be super as i'm pretty new to looking after quails and could not find anything to help me on the net!
I adopted 8 Quails from the school i work at, i have 6 females and 2 males. I had noticed the females where in for regular beatings at the school from the males as there was a higher ratio of males to females.
Anyway, i have them home now, they have half a shed and a massive outdoor cage set up attached to the shed.
Day 1 and 2 passed without problems but i noiced when coming home from work today (day 3) that one of the females had be severly battered around the head, so much so that one eye has shut closed, whether or not it'll re-open i don't know? or this is just a normal reaction like when we get a wack in the eye or a cut which automatically closes up, again i don't know!? Help!
So, on seeing the injury i watched them for 20 or so minutes and it became clearly evident one male was attacking all the other birds, i swiftly removed him to a seperate cage, but his callsign could still be heard by the other birds and they jumped or became very skittish everytime he blew up, again i moved him so far away there is no chance they can hear him and the group of 6 females and 1 male setteled down dramatically within 30 minutes. So much so that they are now all sat outside together, 2 other the other females have even snuggled up to the injured 1.
BUT! my other worry is this, the remaining male seems to have it in for one of the females and whenever they pass he's straight on her back tugging at the skin, i know this is relativley normal but he does that too 1 and then will happily sit with the others? i thought this was quite strange. Help!
So to sum up my few worries,
1. How will the quail that has a bashed up eye react? (as in, will it heal? is there anything i can do?)
2. Why is the remaining male picking on 1 female and not the others?
3. Before removing the aggressive male he left quite an injury list in one night, all the females bar 2 have feathers missing from the back of there heads/back, and 2 have quite nasty cuts, which are a mix of old ones healing and a couple of new.
What should i do?! If anything!
Many thanks to anyone in advance.
