Help-I’m so confused.
I have an established covey, 15 birds, 1/2 are 2yrs old, the other half are 1 yr old. Only Minor issues for almost a year.
Today two of my hens, one from each age group decided my roo was the enemy. They completely ripped all the feathers out of his back. Drawing blood and tearing skin. These girls do Not have eggs. I’ve previously seen my broody’s inform him he‘s no longer welcome. This was so much more than that!
One of my Broody’s did hatch chicks today, but she’s not in the coop and hasn’t been for about two months. She and a few other hens have been in another coop with a different Roo.
The day started normally, everyone got up and he made the rounds to see who was interested or not paying attention, then bang one hen went after him and later in the day the second one joined In. According to my cameras this went on relentlessly all day.
I’ve put him in isolation to heal. Though I know, it’s probably them I should remove. They’ve never been buddies before, and are not the usual instigators.
Thoughts? Are they just heat crazy? It was so nice to finally have peace in the coop.🤷‍♀️

😵‍💫 Wow, that's crazy! I had some crazy beat downs on my roo when I first introduced him. But nothing since then. I wonder if something is wrong with the roo and they sense it. Has he been sick at all?

This does happen sometimes. I don't know about where you're at, but it's been crazy hot in a lot of places, which will make just about anything irritable.

I would look for things that have changed. Are they moulting? Has the weather been odd? Any predators hanging around?

Thank you both! It is crazy!
I have way to many cameras, no predators, no warnings.
everything was fine, then it wasn’t. I know quail can be like this. It’s just so weird it was my original Roo.
Really, the only change was the heat and the hatchlings in the other coop. They can definitely hear and sorta see them. But these two hens have never had any of their own. And last year, when my other broody let him come back inside the coop, he was Amazing and took over caring for half the chicks.
He’s back outside in an another section of the other coop, by himself. He looks much better and very purple today.💜
It’ll be interesting to see what happens when I try to put him back in his coop.
Thanks for the feedback!
