Quail Incubator

It looks like you posted in the Quail hatch along thread too. As I mentioned there, I have this one, which has a turner that can accommodate either chicken or quail eggs.

From my experience with this incubator:

Get at least two thermometers, aquarium thermometers work well, but calibrate them. I have three of these. All of mine measure 1.1 degrees low, but I know that because I did the ice water calibration test on them. Trust these temperatures over what the incubator tells you.

If you use the rails for water, your humidity will be too high. I use baby food jars partially covered with tin foil to keep a fairly steady 30% humidity (It took me three hatches to figure this out).

I’ve tried using that incubator before and I really don’t recommend it. The temperature fluctuates on the order of 3-4 degrees and the humidity is impossible to control. Also, the heat is very unevenly distributed. I wound up with a zero percent hatch rate even with 100% fertility, which I felt awful about, and bought a better incubator. With that one I’ve been running 85-90% hatch

What incubator did you buy? I really want to do this the right way, and not mess it up.

I wound up getting a really good deal on a hovabator genesis 1588 from a friend, but those get really pricey. If cost is a huge concern, maybe try looking for incubators of resale sites like fb marketplace? There are sometimes some really good deals on there now that the hatching season is ending

You had to say that, didn't you? I just found a Genesis Hovabator with turning racks on craigslist for $100. I don't need it. The one I have works, just not as well as it could... I shouldn't spend the money...

120 quail capacity... just think of the possibilities... (Insert devil emoji here hahaha)
I responded to the ad asking if they'd take $80. The ad's been up for 8 days, so there's a good chance they'll take it.

Edit: This model is normally $160 new, and the racks are another $65. If I can get it for $80, that will save me $140. I know this because this model is the one I have in my wishlist.

Honestly if you can get it for $80 it's an absolute steal. I'd even take it for $100. I am in love with the thing because it not only seems to have an awesome hatch rate but really cuts down on hatch defects, at least in my limited experience! I haven't had to brace any teeny tiny feet yet, thankfully
