Quail not laying

Hello BYC Members!!! I have gone to this website for lots of research and thought it was time to join. I am 14 and over the summer for my birthday I asked for quail. I found an add in the paper for quail and they sold a minimum of 50 at a time so I bought fifty. they are 12 weeks now and 5 died over the 12 weeks. I sold 20 to my neighbor and now have 25. the only problem is they haven't started laying yet and I don't know what to do. they are jumbo brown coturnix quail. they are all healthy and happy and I don't understand it. if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Quail are seasonal layers and will not lay this time of year unless you add extra lighting for them. 12 to 14 hours of light total. Never keep the light on past 16 hours a day. They need 8 hours of darkness. Don't crowd them in either. Make sure to give all these birds enough room to live a happy life.

Can quail gender be positively determined at this age? Not knowing the seller, I would question if you were indeed sold females.
