I posted a thread in the coops section and wasn't getting any info from quail people...

My question for you guys is this:

I have plans to build a large pole barn style building to store an RV out of the weather and plan to build chicken coops/runs along one long wall. The coops will be separated from the rest of the building by a wall but still under the roof. The coops will not need to be but about 7ft tall, so only about half the height of the building.

My plan is to possibly put quail on a 2nd floor above the coops. I have read all the posts about quail catching diseases from chickens but if they were totally separated with a solid floor that people could walk around on and were still inside breeder hutches, would that be enough separation from the chickens below?

I also read all those posts about diseases before getting quail. I decided to take the risk and house my quail in a pen right next to the chickens. My quail are on the ground and I think that makes a difference in helping them to build a stronger immune system. The chickens can go right next to the quail run. My quail are grown out in cages in the barn, about 6 ft from the chicken coop. The quail are exposed to both chicken dander and poop. I haven't had any problems with illness in my quail.

So basically you just have to decide the risks you are willing to take and what lengths you want to go to for bio-security. I think housing them above (if they don't share ventilation) should pose very little risk to the quail.
