I'm in North Florida as well, and we sell day olds for 1.00, 4 or 6 weekers (don't need extra heat) for 2.00-2.50, and 8 weeks and over (mature and laying) 4.00-5.00 each.
We sell enough to pay for the feed to raise birds for our freezer at no cost. Not much profit after that.
I think it may be illegal in FL to release any quail other than Bob Whites. And as has been pointed out, they don't flush...mine fly out of the cages occasionally, and just sit, waiting to be picked up.
Not much sport there....You probably need to have a specific conversation with the buyer regarding the type of quail they are looking for. I'm guessing they don't understand that Coturnix and Bobwhite are
not the same. You might make one sale before they realize that Coturnix's are not what they need....but I think it's better to be upfront initially.
We have a neighbor who belongs to a hunt club, and he says they pay 2.00-3.00 for Bob White chicks, but no one has time/space to brood them. So there may be a market for adult birds in the 5-6.00 range.
They take more time than Coturnix to mature, but may not consume as much feed.
Since you have a ready and willing buyer, it may be worthwhile to work with them and raise some Bob's, keeping close track of expenses, and charge accordingly. You won't get rich, but if you have the time
and enjoy the birds...why not?
Also, before setting eggs, get a deposit. We've been stiffed doing custom hatches...were able to sell most on craigslist, but suddenly having to house 150 quail is no fun. A deposit will make the buyer more committed.
