Hi,
I have regular quail, they r fine, texas a & m, they r fine.
My Butler bobwhites are 1-2 months old and I have lost a couple and a few looked like they had bloody noses....The area where the nose holes are, around there bloody. and possibly opened up some, if that makes sense.
Anyone?
Help monarc!!!

It sounds like you might have a problem with pecking. Bobwhites are well known as aggressive, and can be canibalistic (sp?) if they are overcrowded, or otherwise unhappy.

I would suggest that you sit and watch them closely, this is most likely your problem. You should put them in a bigger enclosure, that will ease their stress. And you should make sure there are plenty of hiding spots in there as well.

I Have Alot Of Butlers. This Is A Pecking Problem! They Are Very Prone To It, As All Bob Whites Are. They Need More Space-- It Will Help, But May Not Solve Entirely. Place Some "hides" In Their Enclosure So That The Meak Can Get Away From The Aggressors. At The 1st Sign Of Being Pecked On The Individual That Is Being Harrassed Must Be Removed And Protected, Otherwise Every Bird Will Turn On Him! If You Can Find The Aggressor (usually The Bigest Male) Caught In The Act Of Course... Then Seperate It From The Covey.

They Do Best In Large Open Flight Pens. If Kept In Smaller Cages Make The Coveys 1 Male To 3 Or 4 Females --- I Know Its Kinda Hard To Tell Male From Female At 1-2 Mos Of Age But If You Can Seperate Them. If Not Put Them In Large Pen.

Folks Will Say They Need More Protein, Giv Them Some Cat Food, Etc... In My Experience This Really Doesnt Work With Bob Whites In General, And Especially With The Butlers.

Oh, Forgot To Mention, Bw's Dont Go For Pecking At Feathers On The Back(they Will , But Not Nearly As Bad As Other Birds, Rarely To The Point Of Killing)...... They Go For Feet/ Legs And The Bridge Of The Nose! (these Injuries Will Kill!)

Shelley's Post Is Mostly Correct, But Its Not A Cannibalistic Thing...... Its A Dominance Thing With The Bob Whites! And The Butlers Are Usually The Most Docile Sub Speces To Handle, But They Are Bob Whites...
