I only have 3 quail, but lord almighty, they smell more than my parrots! Not horribly so, but enough to make me go... 'how do I control this so the landlord doesn't freak?'. I'm using newspaper with a paper bedding thrown on top. I've been for the amount of Quail I have, I should try sand or pine shavings. What do you guys use? What DON'T you recommend?

Thanks in advance, folks :)

Peat moss is great smell wise but dusty if they're indoor. I use it in my brooders. The additive PDZ can help too if it's an ammonia smell. I wouldn't recommend sand, it does not absorb any odors.

I used to say this too!! And then I changed feeds and no more awful stink! And I have 32 birds. I was using the Purina game starter and switched to Bar Ale game bird and poof, stink gone. Not sure what’s different but you might try that and see if it helps!

Same thing, but I went from southern states to Hudson, and the smell disappeared. Some feeds make smelly poop, and some feeds smell when they get damp (pooped on etc). I would try switching feeds and see if it helps. I find Hudson feed gamebird pellets to be excellent, they are available thru chewy. Also, paper bedding has no smell assistance, imo I would switch to pine or hemp.

Purina Startena made my birds smell pretty bad too. I feed mine either Bar Ale game bird crumble or Hunt & Behren's game bird crumble. I actually like the Hunt & Behren's better. It's a little higher in protein, it smells better than the Bar Ale, and it costs a bit less.

Thank you everyone for your input :D. I'm feeding a locally made feed made by Horizon Feeds. My Quails' poop isn't terrible until it gets wet.... then OMG **faints** LOL! It turns out I had a leaky water bottle. I can't wait till I get a proper cage for my little minions. It will be so much easier to control stuff like smell and messes!

Horizontal nipples are amazing for preventing leaky water.

Wet quail poop stinks to high heavens no matter what you feed them.

When I've needed to bring more than a couple quail inside, I've used stall bedding (the compressed wood pellets). They absorb a ton of liquid, are easy to turn over between changes, you can spot-clean with just a few birds and—at least in my experience—the birds don't try to eat them.
