Quail Space

i have kept 35-40 coturnix in a 8'x2' community pen with little to no problems. they seem ok with this much space. Most people say 1 sq ft per bird but i have had no problems.

Oh man.... you can squeeze those little guys and gals into some small spaces. I kept up to 5 in a 16" x 16" cage for breeding (4 hens and a roo). The girls all laid regularly and when I hatched 20 eggs I was rewarded with 14 chicks!

Any bird can live in a tight space. It's just not the most humane way to do it or the cleanest way to do it. If you think about it, the chicken eggs you buy at the store are often in 8" x 16" cages with a cup of water and a trough of feed in front of them. They don't even get to turn around. Yet they live their lives putting out an egg a day for Mc Muffins or the local church's egg bake.

Choose your words carefully this a touchy subject! I put up to 8 coturnix in a 2'X2' cage 6 hens 2 roos with no problems. I've also had five in the same size cage and they picked on each other non stop. If you keep the roos low they are fine but some folks will say you need 2 sq. feet per bird. Bobwhites seem a little more aggressive and fight more when cramped. Just build it as big as you can and go with it you can always eat the extras if you have too many.
