Quail temperament

I've always read that coturnix are skittish. Supposedly everything makes them startle, flying straight up into the air and sometimes breaking their necks if the cage is too tall. Well, nobody told MY qiuail. Nothing startles them, including my ten lb rabbits hopping over to sniff them or the cat trying to reach into the cage to snag one of them. Even my kids screaming at each other doedn't seem to bother them. What's the deal?

Some are tamer than others. It depends on their personalities and how they're raised. My first hatch, I lost two to flushing and breaking their necks. None since. In fact, these days I lament that my birds do not have a healthy fear of feet. I have to be incredibly careful not to step on them.

I don't like Coturnix because they are so docile and without much personality. They never seem to do anything that is interesting or entertaining.
