i have just put quail eggs in my incubator yesterday (never done this before) but this morning when I checked it said 38.6 degrees. Have I cooked them?? Or might they still hatch?

Welcome to BYC.

First question...is this thermometer built into the bator or is it one you bought separately?

it was a separate one I put inside the incubator, thanks for the welcome and replies. I think I may have cooked them but I moved the thermometer to the other side and it says 36 degrees so maybe they might be ok?

Don't trust any thermometer.
You must calibrate at least one of them to know the correct reading.

I keep four thermometers in my bator at all times so I can tell with a quick glance which spot may be warmer or cooler than it needs to be and adjust accordingly.
