Quail Toys [Light-hearted Thread]

Congratulations on the purchase of your new home, Quailsong. When you have the greenhouse and runs completed, I would love to see photos of them. Always looking for new ideas in the hopes that we might eventually be able to build in a larger space.

Thanks! Actually, I was hoping on taking some pictures for you all of the 'before' set-up to let your ideas run wild with mine. I've never had quail before, so I'm adapting from what I know of chickens. I figure you guys could spot any issues or ideas that I might miss. So it may end up being a mix of a quail community's dream coop.^^

Congrats Quailsong! Also, it is a good idea to ask other people....I have had some revolutionary ideas from just asking around. Plz post the pics too...can't wait to see the masterpiece!

Thank you! I might have some 'before' pics in May for everyone to see. The big move won't be till July though! I'll make sure to start a new thread on it for my 'build' so that I can get everyone's ideas in. :D

I've an idea for a quail toy. Anyone want to try this out? (I got no quails yet!!)

Seed Ball - Get a screw-type hollow ball (like for dogs/cats) & drill 1-3 holes. Fill with seeds a bit smaller than the holes. As the quail peck the seeds that fall out, they'll move the ball & it will drop more seeds. They may run after it (esp if more than one) & get used to the idea that it gives treats.

For best results, use on firm ground with a hula-hoop, large cat ring bottom, or soft home-made ring (if indoors) to keep the ball from getting stuck in a corner.

I've started the process of "clicker" training my button quail with a laser pointer. Basically, I turn on the light and then toss down a dried meal worm. They've picked up on it pretty quick so when they see the laser light they know to expect a meal worm. I hope to follow this up by conditioning some behaviors and using the light as a marker.

Sounds like a type of dog training I've seen before. That's a great strategy, I'd love to find out how it all works out with your quail. Let us know, please!

Yup, it's exactly like what you've seen with dogs. It's called positive reinforcement training and I've used it successfully with a variety of bird species; this will be my first attempt with a ground bird though. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress!

Best of luck with that! I remember trying it on my pet rabbit I had a while back and she looked at me like "Psh, I'm not falling for that."
She was def the boss in the house.

Anyone thought of using a mini-swing? Sort of like a swinging roost for outdoor use. I've seen people use them for chickens before in the past, was curious if anyone did the same or for their quail.
