Hey, so recently my quail has gotten a prolapsed vent I checked on her today and it’s pretty severe. I tried gently pushing it back in and nothing has worked. I was wondering if you guys had any advice or tips to help?
Thanks
If she's with others, then you'll want to separate her out so the exposed tissue does not get damaged.
Can you tell if there's an egg in the prolapse or if it's just tissue?
General care for a prolapse without seeing it is to clean it well - you can use saline, warm soapy water (rinse well) or a mild antiseptic like Chlorhexidine. IF She's Not Lethargic, then you can give her a soak in a warm Epsom salts solution to help reduce swelling.
Apply oil, honey, ointment, cream - whatever you have on hand to the prolapsed and exposed tissue to keep it moist. You don't want the tissue to dry out.
She needs to stay hydrated and she needs Calcium. For a Quail Hen, I'd give 1/2 Calcium Citrate tablet once daily for several days. She needs to the calcium to help retain the tissue once it goes back in. She may have an egg on the way and it's going to be difficult on her too.
Keep the tissue cleaned the best you can, it will likely get soiled when she poops, but the ointment, oils, etc. can help that slide off. But she'll need to be cleaned up well before you attempt to push the tissue back in. It may take days to resolve depending on the severity and swelling.
Do know that sometimes a prolapse can't be fixed or there's complications, do the best you can and get us some photos.
