Quail

sam~ Any ideas what we could use to house our 8 cortunix quail? I am wanting to keep them as pets, and maybe sell some eggs on ebay. Would a rabbit hutch work?

For 8 Cortunix all you will need is probably a pen thats somewhere in the range of 8 sq/ft - 15 sq/ft it is really all up to you on how much room you give your birds. I will post pics once I have my pen done. It is like a rabbit hutch...just without the hutch. It is wire bottomed and has 2 doors for easy access. Also the number of birds you house will also depend on how many males and females there are....keep a ratio of...

Male/Female
1 to 1
1 to 2
1 to 3
1 to 4 (this is the ratio im going to keep)

I will be housing them in a colonie type breeding situation.
Anymore questions feel free to ask!

I cant really recommend a good book as I have learned all my info from breeders...online...and magazines. But here are some good sources....

I would say anywhere from 6-8 weeks you should be able to sex cortunix. For standard colored birds use this method....

Males have salmon breast feathers...no speckling

Females have speckled brest feathers

Also the males make a "crowing" sound when they are sexually mature.
Good Luck!

You can also talk to your local hunting preserve and they usually will sell live birds or chicks. I just happened to find a great guy in the next town who hatches and sells them
I would call it more of a warble then a crow ha ha ha. I about jumped out of my skin the first time i heard it. C

What do any of you recommend as housing for quail? I've read stuff about "raise them on wire", not sure what that really means.

I just bought a bunny hutch that I'm hoping will be good for them. It's got an open bottom that sets on the ground. You stake it down. I've already covered the 2x3 wire with hardware cloth and plan on surrounding the perimeter of it with a foot laid flat all way around. On the "coop" part of the hutch I plan to attach a door that I would close and secure at night.

Whatcha think? Anyone have any pics of their quail set ups?!!!

Amy... our little button quail males make a high pitched "Pewwww!" ( like Pepe le Pew!) sound. Sometimes it seems like they won't ever stop, and if my husband's laptop make a beep when the power cord comes loose, he can "talk" to them with it. LOL! It's funny to hear them talk back! I don't know that I've heard them at night, but they do like to talk during the day.

Coyote ~ it depends on how many you're going to keep in a cage... I have mine, so far, separated into pairs, each pair in their own 11x11x16" wire cage made of 1/2" hardware cloth (bunny wire). I put shavings on the bottom, but if you use the 1/4" hardware cloth, you could probably keep the larger quail on that so the droppings fall through. (Sam, correct me please!). I know some people like to keep their quail on sand/shavings, since that is more like their natural settings.

It's 30" across the longest side, 11" deep and about 11-12" high, with a divider in the middle.

I dont have any pics of my pen as it is still just lumber and wire. But the demensions are going to be....

8ft by 3ft and 2ft tall in the front and 1ft tall in back.

I also might do buttons but they will be kept in wire cages in the shed.
Keep the Q's coming if yah got them!
