Quailen at Fruits & Berries Tennessean Homestead

Welcome to BYC! Homesteading on a suburban lot! Awesome! You make some good points about quail that I had never considered. I keep hens in a chicken tractor on my edible landscaped acreage. I have 5 acres but other than a bit of firewood and wood chips I only use a 1/2 acre. Chicken tractors keep hens out of sensitive plantings, away from predators and hens out of trouble with neighbors. The hens cultivate and graze around my fruit trees, shrubs and vegetables and my production has increased. I wish you success in your efforts to expand your homestead as small as it is. I grew up on a quarter section homestead but my parents only wanted 5 acres. Unless you need timber or want large livestock it’s not entirely needed to homestead IMO.
Great points and thanks for that feed back. My wife and I are wanting to acquire some land. 5 to 10 acres or more out here in Tennessee. We are just needing to make sure it is the right time and price to do this. So, in the mean time we sit on this half acre lot and do the best we can. Id love to have a creek, well, wood burning stove, solar panels and some live stock. But, its not so easy at the moment. Learning to be content with what God has blessed us with. Stay in touch. You sound like you are doing great! Wayne
