quails nails are really long

I've just noticed that one of my female quails has really long nails
should I cut them and do I need to give them something to scratch to keep their nails short

Hi, yes cutting your hens nails is probably a good idea because when they get too long sometimes the nail can snap and bleeds quite badly so it's best to cut them. As for giving them stuff to scratch I did give mine sand paper for birds for quite a while near the food but they never really used it.

How do you know how much is safe to cut? My quail's nails are solid black and very long. She is 11 weeks old.

I also tried sand paper, but she just tries to eat it. Please let me know if there is anything else I can put in her pen to help keep her nails from getting too long.
