Quails

chickens can pass on diseases to the quails.
i would not keep quails and chickens together at all.
sorry not sure how that got on your post.

Sorry I'm not going to keep them together the quail are going to be on another part of the farm. That's why I'm making a separate coop for them kind of a portable one

Hey again, I just noticed, is that a bunch of corn on the ground? What do you feed them? I ask because if things like corn are diluting their protein percentage requirements, quail can be apt to cannibalism

Thinking back I can remember my females and males going for the back feathers in that area. It just happen around laying season so I remember thinking it was a natural pecking (fluff for the nest) until they seemed to make a raw area. However, I was testing feeds around the same time and it stopped when I went back to the original feeds.
The next season it didn't reoccur.

Get some higher protein feed 21% or better. 18% just isnt enough for quail and your lowering it further with the scratch.

I couldn't find a feed with high enough protein that was unmedicated so use 27% fish food to up my protein as my quail layer pellets are only 20 % they really like the fish feed but still eat plenty of the quail feed too. And my male has calmed down now some of the girls have given in and he is getting some action ! X no signs of any feathers coming out so I think he is being gentle with them thankfully he is a fan of the sneak attack as a girl was just pecking some millet sprays and he just pounced on her bless her ! X :)

My one range boy has "woken up" a few days ago, walking tall and tidbitting for his girls ^^ he was a summer hatch and didn't show any interest in the fall - in fact he acted like a spoiled hen himself taking all the treats he could, but now he seems to be a good boyfriend ^^

I just picked up 25 baby quail they are so cute. We also have some chickens. No don't yell at me I'm not keeping them together, but I do want to know how far apart their pens need to be.

I need some advice from someone who know button quails. I own a pair of one year button quails. I just for my first time used a incubator. My female looses interest after a bit of laying on her eggs. So i started with 7 eggs all a day apart as she only lays one a day. So far only one has hatched and is alive it is the youngest egg (one started to hatch but never got past the zip phase.) So my questions are........ This little chick i named peepers has imprinted on me its all alone still in incubator as i found it hatched this morning. At what point do I take it out and put under a heat lamp. question 2 at what point do i try to teach it how to drink and eat? How old should it be before i try to introduce it to its parents if at all. it seems all it wants to do is be with me it hears my voice and pops up and comes running. Peepers has pooped once is is stumbly but walking. My first egg baby that died was hard on me and the other eggs have shown no signs of hatching yet and they are older. oh and also peepers is kicking the other eggs around is that ok? will it hurt the other eggs? And thank you in advance for any info :)

Kicking eggs in incubator is fine. You can keep her for 24-48 hours after she hatches without food/water but 24-36 is probably better. Once she is dry you can remove/teach her where food and water are. The egg that zippeday, how long has it been since it zipped and can you still hear it?
