Quails

the chick that pipped and zipped died at 5 am it had started i left it alone and by 3pm i checked it and its beak was sticking outta shell and was dead. :( it never even finished its zip. do you think my humidity is to high? i'm at 60% i keep reading and everyone says a different percent to use and i was at 37.7 celcuis i just bumped up to 38 the night before peepers hatched

There is another thread on here, where it was discussed when to remove button chicks from the incubator. The conclusion was don't wait for 24 hours - 12 is better for buttons, they don't have a lot of yolk left when they hatch. And start trying to get it to eat and drink as soon as it's in the brooder, although it might not be interested at first.
I wouldn't introduce it to the parents at all - if it's a male it's likely to start fighting its father at 6-8 weeks, if it's a female it might try to chase it's mother out of its territory as it matures (I've had a few hens chasing other hens) and even if it doesn't, it's father is going to mate with it so so any future chicks might be inbred.
If it ends up being the only one that hatches, it will probably demand a lot of attention - won't sleep unless your hand is cupped over it and such. In that case it might become completely tame and you could keep it as a pet. If it stops being tame as it gets older, I'd either sell it purchase/hatch a mate for it.
If you have trouble getting it to eat, you could try to place the mother in the brooder. If you are lucky, she'll take care of it and teach it to eat. Just keep an eye on her until you are completely sure she won't hurt it, she could kill it quickly if she wanted. If you get her to care for it, it might be possible to put both of them back with daddy (again - make sure daddy doesn't hurt it). Otherwise daddy is probably going to call a lot. Placing mother and baby where he can see them might help. I'd then remove the chick when it's 6 weeks old, to prevent aforementioned issues.

i have at least 40 quails now lol we have many different types i actually just these two white ones from and auction and there so cute i love quails the only problem is they jump around a lot and are very squirmy LOL

Good catch Binki! :D

Thinking back I can remember my females and males going for the back feathers in that area. It just happen around laying season so I remember thinking it was a natural pecking (fluff for the nest) until they seemed to make a raw area. However, I was testing feeds around the same time and it stopped when I went back to the original feeds.
The next season it didn't reoccur.

Get some higher protein feed 21% or better. 18% just isnt enough for quail and your lowering it further with the scratch.
thank you Binki. I have to reup on feed this weekend, I will definitely be looking for a higher protein. I noticed however, I use same kind of starter but each bag I buy is different % in protein. One was 18%, one was 20% and had one 21%. I found that weird.

Hey everyone, I have been incubating Coturnix quail. I hatched 3rd batch 4 weeks ago so decided to try my hand at hatching Bobwhite quail. Yesterday I had 13 out of 18 hatch. My only concern is, out of all my hatches I always have one that their poor legs just aren't strong. The toes curl under and can't stand up so the others run, peck, and pick on those so I end up losing these. I'm including a pic of what I'm talking about so if anyone can tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just nature, I'd be much appreciated.
