When you pick up a new vehicle here you will, if you follow tradition, take it to a monk to be blessed and for a chant or two wishing the occupants safe journeys. Off we went early this morning to see the head monk at a temple about fifteen minutes down the road. When we arrived, Mrs. Thaiturkey told me that this particular monk was family and he would do extra blessings for us. Thoughtful though that was, my heart sank. These guys are a bit to handy with talcum paste and the thought of more of it than usual was not a good one.

With some assistance, he added garlands and chanted with string wrapped around the car. Then he set to with the talcum paste. We don't wipe the stuff off because that would, of course, be bad luck. Fortunately, most of the artwork was on the outside of the car where the rains will remove it before too long. Car washing is out of the question because that would be deliberate removal. That on the headlining, steering wheel boss and instrument cowl will remain there until I accidentally rub it off - very soon.

I guess this means the wait for the new car (truck) is over - congratulations!

Maybe we need to start a tradition like that in my town. Wilmington is notorious for its traffic problems; a few blessings couldn't hurt! Besides, the talcum paste could serve as a subtle warning that this particular driver/vehicle pair were still in the "getting acquainted" stage, and might be a bit awkward in their interactions.

Yes, here at last! What a nightmare, the finale being problems with the money transfer to pay for it. However, it was worth the wait.

Driving standards here are such that you need all the luck and blessings you can get. My wife would insist on the temple trip even if I objected. I did sense today that people were moving over for me more often than usual. The garland and talcum on the front indicate a blessing above all others so they may have thought it better to clear a path for me!

Here's a pic that didn't make it to my previous post:

nice photos! Interesting story too. "happy trails to you!" Thailand is soooo green--(seeing the photo through the car windows.) Talcum paste...............lol. BTW pretty car. :O)

Thank you.

Yes, very green, especially now that the rains have started. The tree to the left of that pic. has white flowers that are used in garlands sold at the roadside. The scent spreads around the kitchen door and through the open window into our bedroom.

The car is a Mitsubishi suv - Pajero Sport here but perhaps something different in the US. We still need the truck but this is my toy now.

Interesting Situation !
( I'm SURE that I would NOT "appreciate" someone smearing paste on my NEW vehicle !!! Ha-Ha ! )

When in Rome indeed. You don't take chances here on the road. The blessings have nothing whatsoever to do with the teachings of Lord Buddha but even monks have the same right as everyone else to say 'Bless you and keep you safe'. I say the same to every BYC member and with the same authority.

We NEED some of those "Monk's Blessings" out here in New Mexico, U.S.A. around the Indian Reservations.
( a former Governor, Bill Richardson, changed the designation of a local highway from U.S. 666 to U.S. 491 because it became known as "The Devil's Highway". )

COMMENT on my own posting:

IF or WHEN...the "TRUTH" becomes "Politically Incorrect".....there is something wrong with the "Politics".
