I have been reading threads on here and cant find a quality heated waterer for a dozen hens. The one I bought is terrible. I have to turn it upside down to fill it, the fill plug is a rubber stopper that just pushes in, fills the water ring clear to the top, if I even look at it it spills. Cord is on the bottom, if it is tilts even a tiny bit it will empty itself which is easy when the cord is cold and stiff. I know it is leaking or chickens are banging it and slopping water all over their bedding which is no good in winter. Thinking of a nipple one maybe. What you all using? I dont want to cobble something up and no light bulbs or heat lamps. I do have electric in the coop! Thanks

I use a heated dog bowl for 9 chickens. It has high sides and is on blocks so they don't kick stuff into it. It holds a gallon, and has lasted for years.

THIS BOWL is close to @SueT 's bowl but it holds a little more. It works great, has a peck-proof cord and works wonderfully with my 8 chickens, but could also handle 12. It keeps water un-frozen even in 5F Wisconsin weather! Plus it's a better price than other ~specific~ chicken waterers.

I figured an open dog bowl would get knocked over or filled up with crap daily.
The one I recommended is too big and if filled with water it is very sturdy and can barely be moved. Chickens don't like to 'swim' like ducks. They would only poop in it if it was placed under a roost. Also the one I recommended is tall and hasn't gotten shavings in it.
