They were not strong healthy stock at least the ones I received, none of ours survived to laying pullet. Had chicks of the same breed we ordered from other sources and they were strong healthy birds and all lived and are now starting to lay. even thorough the weird weather we are having... you know Arctic blast kills anything and today 60 and nice and just days apart We also ordered Bantams from them around the same time and again very disappointed except for the white mini Cochin they are too cute very good looking. We also have one white tiny tiny hen which is not really white but not blue either, but I can not find anything that matches what she looks like to a description.
I've used Ideal for the last 4 years and got about 6 orders from them. Only bantams and cornish cross's but I've never had any problems with chicks and shipping is a breeze which coming to Alaska isn't always true. The one problem I had was when I ordered my lavender silkies and I got 8 of them and then they put barred rock cockerels in for warmth and all but 4 of my silkies got squished.
I gave the br's away but they were big healthy chicks. So if your getting bantams don't let them give you cockerels for warmth. All my adult birds from them are even tempered but then again I believe environment is a bigger factor than genetics to adult temperament. Hope that helps.

Then Ideal is great for you. My Girls always have had pretty good barring during there first year; the second year i've noticed whole feathers going black. I have 7 barred rock hens and 4 of them run to get petted. They are very sweet and mine were extremely strong and healthy on arrival (course i do live in Texas *shrug*). My BR's are so great i'm even considering making them my only breed.
Here are a few pics of them:
Its very hot , thats why she looks to be panting all the time.
My BR came from Ideal. She is such a great layer. She hatched in May of last year. She started laying in October. I get an egg from her every single day and she hasn't stopped laying through the winter. She looks correct to me for a BR and has nice confirmation. I don't have any other BRs to compare her size to. I know they are a heavy breed, but she is not as large as my Black Copper Marans pullets. I think the Marans are fairly large however.

Most of my birds came from Ideal, my barred Holland is small and has cloudy barring, but she does lay a huge white egg, my red & black stars are ok, but lay only a medium egg. The other birds I have come from breeders and are all so much better in all areas.
Why are the chicks that are from breeders so much better? If I breed the chicks that i got from Ideal with they be better? I so want to have some little chickies running around this summer!!! I got two silkies along with my EE's and I think one is male and one is female so I really want silkie babies!! My BR roos that I got as backing peanuts look like they are supposed to....
I think it would depend on the breeder as to quality. Ideal is a large scale hatchery, they probably do not breed for show. And they state their birds are not show birds but are purebred. I think it is possible to get actually lower quality from a breeder if you do not know them. And I avoid any breeder who advertises SQ, does anybody know why the just don't say show quality? I DO. I don't see how a breeder could ruthlessly cull their stock and sell for minimum of money and survive. As Judge Judy always says "If it doesn't make sense it's not true"
