Question 2: Bumblefoot ?- doesn't quite match other pictures

But now I need to figure out why his skin is red and irratated. The redness goes down the sides of his legs and between his toes. I have another post with pictures of what it looks like on other parts of his body. At least two of the hens he sleeps with have it also but in less amounts. I just want to get this guy healthy. As much as he dispises me I like him

In people, when a wound infection on an extremity gets into the bloodstream and heads toward the rest of the body, red streaks are a typical first sign, and skin irritation in the area would not be unusual. BUT, when this happens in people, I have never seen it go anywhere but up, toward the center of the body. I am really not sure what to make of red streaks going toward toes.

Not a lot of people use a corn byproduct for bedding. You don't suppose he is allergic to corn, do you? It's a common allergen in people and dogs. Have no idea whether this crosses over to chickens!

I haven't seen your other thread. If you want to link it, I will see if it stirs something useful in this old nursey brain of mine....

Here is the other thread. He did have lice but we treated for them twice and I haven't seen any since. Two of the four hens that sleep with him also have redness right around their breast bones but no where else.

I still don't have a good answer for you, but I am also still suspicious of the corn cob bedding. Most all these areas are in direct contact with bedding, and I am not hearing anything else that raises an alarm. I have no knowledge of using it, or experience with it. If they were mine, I'd get a bale of hay or something, remove the corn, and see if it made a difference. NO guarantee it will help.

(Yes, the keel bone and breast bone are the same, if you haven't figured that out by now.)

I'll switch bedding tomorrow. I should get a video of him walking/running it's really kind of comical. My son wants to make a video with the JAWS theme playing when he stalks me. If I'm in the coop collecting eggs you will just see his head pop around the corner then go back. he does that several times, then will strut out and act like he is just going for a jaunt, eating some bugs. If I look at him he turns his head and starts eating grass. Then when he thinks I'm not looking he charges at me.

I'll have to see what else the feed store has besides hay. My hubby hates hay in the coops and I get paranoid about mites/lice.

Allergies in animals are terrible. I have an 10 year old dog that is allergic to ummm - the outside. Right now her whole back is nearly naked where she has lost/chewed off her fur.

Ok - I think my load of laundry is done, time to stick in the dryer and go to bed.

From what I've read, mites/lice are more inclined to live in straw than hay. My feed store carries nothing that can be used for litter except hay. I have to drive 30 miles to a TSC to get pine shavings. Maybe you will have better luck.
