Just wondering, if I have a high quality rooster can I get decent chicks if I breed with lower quality hens? I only have a few nice ones but I have access to more hens of lesser quality. They are silver laced wyandotte's

Depends on how much and what type of "quality" we're talking here. It all boils down to genetics and just what traits we're dealing with.

So for example if I have a decent Wyandotte, not great but better than most hatchery stock, and a bunch of pinch-tailed, poorly laced, underweight hens. . . I'm not going to go too far.

But if I have a great male over some okay females, like for example what some BLRW stock looks like out there, I may likely improve those girls. Perhaps they need shorter backs, and he's got the stuff.
